A worrying issue - mind +body+q+a (Singapore Shape Dec 2006 magazine, pg 60)
Q: The end of the year is a stressful time for me and i worry and stress a lot over my commitments. What is the difference between normal worrying and an anxiety disorder?
A: "Anxiety and worry are normal emotions", says Dr Adrian Wang, a consultant psychiatrist at Gleneagles Medical Centre. "However, if your worry greatly exceeds the demands of the situation, or if you are worrying so often that it starts to affect your ability to function at work or at home, then you may have an anxiety disorder."
"Anxiety disorders are a large group of illnesses, which include Panic Disorder, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Worry is the only one of the symptoms of these disorders. Some of these disorders have physical symptoms - like breathlessness, shivering, tension headaches and gastric discomfort brought on by excessive anxiety and worry", he says.
